Welcome to CribMac.com
Welcome to CribMac.com, home of the Digital Pimp. I aim to help you put together your own killer Mac home theater, for a lot less than you think. We’ll focus on design, construction, gear, with lots of tips & tricks to put it all together. Whether you want to build a theater like mine, or just add a little somethin’ to your own setup, I’ll be dropping some serious knowledge on you.
Why can I help? Who the hell am I? Well, that’s a long story, full of mystery and intrigue (ok, maybe not.) But it is a story of one geek’s dream to build his own home theater on a budget, while not sacrificing on having a killer experience.
I have been dabbling in computers since there were personal computers, back when the TRS-80 ruled the earth. I moved on to work with computers big and small, even some beasts that filled rooms when I interned at NASA in the early 80s. While working as a engineering draftsman, I cut my teeth on some of the first CAD systems. The graphics bug bit hard.
Multimedia was only a dream for years until I nabbed my first Mac in 1985. The rest, as they say, is history.
Having run a successful consulting business in digital prepress technology and integration, I was exposed to graphics and design pretty early. I always had in my mind to stay ahead of the curve, making the move to teach myself multimedia development, since you certainly couldn’t learn it at any school.
I founded a company to specialize in multimedia for trade shows and events, where I learned how to digitally pimp for fun & profit for over a decade. That’s where it all came together. Video, audio, graphics, presentations, projection, sound systems.
The Digital Pimp was born. And not a moment too soon.
Since that time, I have been working in the media industry, advancing the art of multimedia at AOL, and later handling multimedia product management for a major telco on a high fiber diet (guess who!)
So why write this blog you say?
I have been watching the technology evolve for decades, and we are finally at the point where anyone with a little money and some sweat equity can build a great home theater. But, it helps to have the knowledge to get it done.
Paging the Digital Pimp. Purple courtesy phone, please.
I’m here to help you make a little magic in your humble abode. I have put together 2 home theaters, so that means I have done a lot of research into the field, using my background to sort through the noise & nonsense the industry puts out constantly. I have strong opinions in the area, and I ain’t scared to share. So strap in, you’re gonna get an earful from time to time (don’t even get me started on 3D TV. Sheez)
Finally, some disclosures so you know where I stand:
- The opinions on this blog are mine and mine alone.
- The products I write about are things I have purchased and use. I do not and will not get freebies from any company. If the ‘Pimp tells you he likes some piece of gear, he comes by the opinion honestly. Any other gear you read about it probably commentary on industry news, where I am free to pontificate like the rest of the yokels on teh intertubes.
- I do work for Verizon. I’m proud of the work we do. FiOS kicks ass, and I make no bones about it. I don’t get free service. My company doesn’t endorse anything I write here. You also will NOT find anything on my site that is inside knowledge. Don’t even think about asking either. No. Go. Away. Now.
- I do own stock in Apple. I have been a customer and shareholder for decades. Hard not to love a company with products that enabled me to run a highly successful multimedia production shop. Not going to stop now, but you will benefit from someone who knows the product inside & out, without the reality distortion field.
That’s about it. Now you know (and knowing is half the battle.)
Hope you enjoy it. Kick back, relax, pop a beer, and hang for a while. Deal?
